Meet Maris Lawyer, the winner of this year's South Carolina Novel Prize for her manuscript, "The Blue Line Down." This was chosen by Stephanie Powell Watts who said that "this story shows us how a decent enough person might be compelled to aid and abet bullies and killers. The story also shows us the main character's remarkable path to possible redemption.” We caught up with Maris to ask about her book, who's inspiring her right now, and what she's doing when she isn't writing!

As we look forward to our next 25 years "cultivating readers and nurturing writers" in Spartanburg and beyond, we thought it would be fun to look back on our first 25 years through the lens of the Hub City Press catalog. We begin by paying homage to our co-founder Betsy Wakefield Teter, whose essay "Magnolia Tree" appeared in our first publication, The Hub City Anthology. It is the book that launched 100 more.

Whether sequestered at home—after all, there’s no place like it—or simply sticking close to it may have circumscribed our physical mobility, the past ten months have also offered us an unprecedented collective pause. In between working, learning, and sheltering at home, American citizens have had the opportunity to reflect and reset, to remember, and to revel in what makes this place—each of our individual homes and hometowns—significant, and even sacred.

Upon graduation I moved to Spartanburg to start my first 'adult' job at SC School for the Deaf and Blind where my love for sign language grew stronger. Over the years I continued to learn, love and communicate through sign language. As a certified Speech Therapist, communication is important to me!

"There was just too much grey area for me to feel comfortable working in such close proximity and coming in physical contact with as many different people as I do on a daily basis to be able to do my job while simultaneously protecting my unborn child. There’s just no such thing as social distancing in a hair salon."
