Turning 100 is a big deal, especially for a print publication these days. So to celebrate our 100th issue, we are giving you two generous helpings of Gravy: This summer issue is the first (over 200 pages!), with part two coming in the fall.

You’ll find more than two dozen stories and poems in this issue, most of them reprints of some of our favorite pieces from the past decade. In all of these stories, you’ll recognize SFA’s mission to document, study, and explore the diverse food cultures of the changing American South. This issue also offers a handful of new delights, including a photo essay by Olivia Bowdoin marking the closure of Weaver D’s—the Athens, Georgia, institution that was always "Automatic for the People"—and a mouthwatering collection of vegetable plate recipes created by Sheri Castle and inspired by memorable SFA symposium meals.

If this summer issue is a greatest hits compilation, fall is our next studio album: a fresh and hearty helping of deeply reported stories that touch on issues from body image to dangerous illnesses to a profile of a business built on what others leave behind. All of them speak to the ever-changing American South and how we meet and embrace those challenges. Together, these two issues mark the milestone of Gravy at 100 and open the door for what’s to come.
