Submissions

The board of the Hub City Writers Project has approved the following submission guidelines and publication committee policies:

Submission Guidelines

The Hub City Writers Project of Spartanburg, South Carolina, serves readers and writers by publishing works that foster a sense of place and by sponsoring events and programs.

Publications include literary works of fiction, personal essay, poetry and memoir, as well as nonfiction works that are concerned with the history and culture of South Carolina and beyond.

Consideration for publication of a work requires a proposal consisting of the specific elements listed below. Please do not submit a complete manuscript unless one is requested. Submissions will be evaluated based on author credentials, content, writing quality, and/or marketability. Any submissions that do not adhere to the following guidelines will not be considered. Online submissions are not accepted.

  1. The Hub City Writers Project does not consider any unsolicited manuscripts for publication.

  2. Book proposals will be accepted twice a year during the months of March and September. Hub City will respond to a book proposal within six months.

  3. Book proposals must contain the following:

    • Detailed outline

    • Table of contents, if applicable

    • Introduction, if applicable

    • A chapter or excerpt of ten sample pages

    • Cover letter that includes a brief author biography, return address, and contact information. This is for our records and will not be returned to you.

  4. A self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) must also be included. If there is no SASE, the proposal will not be returned.

  5. Proposals should be typed and double-spaced. If the proposal is not submitted in this format, it will be returned.

  6. Mail to: Hub City, PO Box 8421, Spartanburg SC 29305.

Publications Committee Policies

  1. The Publications Committee will consist of the Executive Director and a minimum of four board members.

  2. The Executive Director may solicit book proposals.

  3. Book proposals will be read and evaluated by the Executive Director and at least one member of the committee.

  4. After such review, proposals will either be rejected or submitted to additional committee members for review. Additional materials may be requested in order to make a final decision regarding the proposal. These may include the entire manuscript, author credentials, and/or a marketing plan.

  5. If a majority of the committee approves the proposal, the Executive Director will then present the proposal to the entire board. Book proposals submitted to the board will include a preliminary budget, including projected revenues.

  6. Final acceptance of a proposal requires a majority vote of the full board.

  7. The Hub City board of directors will not consider a proposal for a book written by a member of the board. A board member must resign in order that his or her book proposal be considered by the full board. That member will be eligible for nomination to the board after disposition of his or her proposal or conclusion of the project.

  8. The Executive Director will work with projects (books, events, and other production) from the early stages to shape them according to the spirit of the Hub City Writers Project mission statement.

  9. From time to time, Hub City will publish anthologies of writers' work. For such anthologies, there will either be a call for manuscripts on a given theme, or editors will select based on the editorial needs of the anthology. An outside judge may be employed to determine those writers selected.

  10. The Publications Committee will meet twice yearly to set the future publication timeline. The full board will be informed and invited to attend these meetings.
