The board of the Hub City Writers Project met in The Showroom February 27, 2007. They approved publication of a history of Spartanburg Methodist College and discussed upcoming publication of Stars Fell on Spartanburg. The board received updates on building issues and will soon begin long-range planning.

StarsFell_5 Proposals are being accepted for submissions for a forthcoming book, Stars Fell on Spartanburg: Hub City's Celebrity Encounters. The upcoming book will feature eyewitness reports (personal essays) and creative accounts--fiction, poetry, and songs--about famous people who have passed through Spartanburg County over the years. Dozens of local writers are already at work on this!

Claire Bateman Reading

Claire Bateman Poet Claire Bateman will read from her works Monday, March 12 at 7:30 pm in The Showroom at Hub-Bub. This reading is part of the Hub City Writers Project’s Spring 2007 Reading Series. Claire Bateman, author of five books of poetry, is a recipient of the Louisiana Literature Poetry Prize, a Robert Frost Fellowship, a Pushcart Prize and a National Endowment for the Arts Poetry Fellowship.

Another successful Writing in Place conference

Hub City hosted 65 poets, fiction writers and essayists at its annual Writing in Place conference Aug. 3-5 at Wofford College. We had 11 great faculty members and  a weekend jam-packed with writing and reading activities. Thanks to all who made it a success, including Mark Olencki who shot photographs for us on Friday night. The next conference is Aug. 1-3, 2008.

New Chairperson Melissa Walker presided over her first official meeting January 23, 2007 when the board met for its monthly meeting at The Showroom. Items discussed included a move toward long-range planning, reprints of two titles and a new website for Hub City. Also: The Showroom intends to tweak program offerings, and the Artist-in-Residence program prepares for a new round of applicants.
