We host Erik Reece, author of Lost Mountain, the story of mountaintop removal, for a reading Monday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. in The Showroom at Hub-Bub. Reece, a poet and essayist, has contributed numerous articles to such publications as The Oxford American and Harper's Magazine. In February 2006, he published Lost Mountain, an alarming account of the irreversible effects radical strip-mining has on the mountains of Appalachia.

Hub City author wins national award

Sheila Ingle, author of the Hub City book Courageous Kate: A Daughter of the American Revolution, has received the 2007 Historic Preservation Award from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). This award recognizes individuals with exceptional contributions to historic preservation.

Our lead fall title this year will be Spartanburg Revisited: A Second Look at the Photographs of Alfred and Bob Willis. This father-son photography team documented almost 80 years of Spartanburg history: its landmarks, colorful characters, and momentous occasions. This forthcoming book, with an introduction written by Emily L. Smith, tells the story of the charismatic men behind the images and revisits their iconic work with new color photographs by Carroll Foster and Mark Olencki.  Spartanburg Revisited

2007 Hub City Prize winners

The annual Hub City Creative Writing Prizes have been awarded to Aly Goodwin in poetry and Mary Ann C. Stoddard in essay. Both of these Spartanburg writers will receive full scholarships to the week-long Wildacres Writing Workshop in Little Switzerland, N.C. this summer.

The board of the Hub City Writers Project met March 27, 2007. They voted to approve another full-time position at Hub-Bub and discussed a future long-range planning session. Applications for two grants were discussed, and approval was given to a Hub-Bub color book that will document in pictures the first year of activities.
