People said he was different and possessed by a dream, but such comments did not deter David English Camak as he worked to fulfill his vision of a common school for textile mill workers. Using his considerable persuasive skills, Camak convinced prominent citizens of Spartanburg, South Carolina, to support the establishment of Textile Industrial Institute. Hub City to publish winner of SC First Novel Contest

COLUMBIA, S.C. – In honor of the 40th Anniversary of the South Carolina Arts Commission, the Commission and its literary partners are pleased to announce a call for submissions for the inaugural South Carolina First Novel Competition. The application deadline is January 2, 2008; the award winner will be announced in May 2008. Partnering with the SC Arts Commission and the Hub City Writers Project for the First Novel Competition are the South Carolina State Library and the Humanities Council SC. The last meeting before summer had a light agenda, with most things reported as going along smoothly. The board approved a new poetry title for 2008, discussed an upcoming strategic planning session, and dealt with an overdue accounts issue.

Hub City names writer in residence

Rachel Harkai

The Hub City Writers Project is pleased to announce that Rachel Harkai of Ann Arbor, Michigan, will be our 2007-2008 writer in residence. She will come to Spartanburg June 1 as part of the HUB-BUB Artists-in-Residence Program where she will "live free and create" for 11 months in our downtown building with three visual artists. Rachel, 22, is a winner of an unprecedented four Hopwood Awards from the University of Michigan, two in poetry and two in non-fiction. The Hopwood is one of the premier creative writing prizes in America and past winners include Arthur Miller and Frank O'Hara.

The board of the Hub City Writers Project met April 24, 2007 and heard updates on the artists in residence (new and old) and discussed ways that we can raise funds to support the Hub-Bub project. Betsy reported on progress on books in the pipeline, and Stephen introduced the idea of an Art Car.
