Writers' Night Out is an ongoing writers' critique group open to anyone in the community. The goal of the group is to build a community of writers in the Upstate.
All writers are welcome to join.
We generally start with introductions and general talk about our writing lives and writing opportunities, followed by occasional guest topics and speakers. So that you come away with some new writing from the night, we break up and do a 20-minute writing prompt before returning to the larger group to share this new writing or another short piece. The last 30-45 minutes are spent in random groups of three for closer discussions of work brought that night, or discussion about writing in general.
Because of the casual nature of the group, it is no longer focused on ongoing critiques. Instead, we hope that you will make connections with other writers at Writers' Night Out in order to form your own writers critique group. Thus, Writers' Night Out encourages small groups to form and continue outside of the monthly gathering.
WRITERS CHALLENGE
How do we further the Hub City Writers Project’s mission to nurture writers and cultivate readers? How do we as writers spread our love of literature and deepen our commitment to craft?
Every month, we will give ourselves a different challenge to expand the literary boundaries of our community and ourselves as writers and readers. Let's grow as writers and readers as we grow our larger community of writers and readers.
May 1 Challenge: Read a book (poetry, fiction, essay, etc.) by someone whose politics don't match yours and see if maybe you can begin to understand what they are about. (Thanks to Jon Davis for this challenge! Do it, and come tell us about your experience at our June 5 gathering.)
