Our publications committee looks for literary or nonfiction books with a strong sense of place. We review manuscript proposals in March and September and have a particular interest in books from Upstate South Carolina.

George Singleton

George Singleton, fiction writer and native of upstate South Carolina, is one of four award-winning authors featured in Hub City's New Southern Harmonies, a collection of short stories that also includes work by Rosa Shand, Scott Gould, and Deno Trakas. Known for his humorous accounts of life in the south, Singleton teaches writing at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville.

Singleton holds degrees from Furman University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has published more than a hundred short stories in national magazines and anthologies, including Denver Quarterly, The Georgia Review, Shenandoah, Playboy, and American Literary Review. His books include four short story collections: These People Are Us: Stories (2001), The Half-Mammals of Dixie (2002), Why Dogs Chase Cars: Tales of a Beleaguered Boyhood (2004), and Drowning in Gruel (2006); and one novel, Novel (2005).

Singleton currently lives in Pickens County, South Carolina, with ceramicist Glenda Guion and their beloved stray cats and dogs. In his free time, Singleton enjoys roaming flea markets and taking long drives.
