Alex began writing poetry at the University of South Carolina as an undergraduate English major. He received an MA in creative writing in 1991 and after a brief but enlightening stint as a construction worker and electrician, he moved to Nashville where he taught English at Nashville Tech for two years before accepting a job to teach 7th grade English and coach basketball and tennis at the University School. In 1997 he moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to pursue a PhD from the Center for Writers at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Alex wrote, published and studied in Mississippi until 2000 when he earned a doctorate. He currently teaches creative writing, modern poetry, Shakespeare, and film history at Limestone College, where he serves as chair of the department.
